Placement

Choose which kinds of pages a widget is allowed to show on, and how that works with the theme block.

Where to find it: open a widget, Media tab, Basics → Placement.

Placement is a filter

A widget shows up only where you put its UGC widget block in your theme. Placement doesn't add the widget anywhere. It sets the kinds of pages the widget is allowed to show on. If its block sits on any other kind of page, the widget stays hidden there.

Placement also sets which page Add to theme opens in the theme editor.

Collection pagesCollection pages. The page listing all your collections doesn't count.Your default collection template

New widgets start on Global / any page. You can see each widget's placement on the Widgets page, in small text under its name.

Change a widget's placement

In the app, click Widgets and open your widget.

On the Media tab, under Basics, open the Placement menu and choose a placement.

Click Save at the top right. You'll see Widget saved.

Check the block is on the right kind of page in your theme. Click Add to theme to jump to the matching page type in the theme editor. See Add the widget to your theme.

Changing the placement only changes where the widget is allowed to show. It never moves the block for you.

Which should I pick?

Most of the time, Global / any page is all you need, because the block's position already decides where the widget appears.

Pick a narrower placement as a safety net. For example, choose Product pages for a widget made for product pages, or Home page for one made for your home page, so it can't show up by mistake if its block is ever added somewhere else.

Product page layout

A widget with the Product page layout is always set to Product pages, and you can't change it. It needs to know which product it's next to. See The Product page layout.

If you switch a widget away from the Product page layout, its placement stays on Product pages, so change it if you need to.

A/B tests

Both versions of an A/B test always share one placement. That's what makes their numbers comparable. While you're editing variant B, Placement is shown as plain text and can't be changed.

Save from Variant A, not Variant B

Saving while Variant B is selected resets Placement to Global / any page. To avoid it, click Variant A in the top bar before you click Save. If it already happened, switch to Variant A, set Placement again, and save. See A/B testing.

Good to know

  • Placement can only hide a widget on pages it can recognise. On the rare theme where the app can't tell what kind of page it's on, the widget shows wherever its block is.
  • To show a widget on every page, add its block to an area of your theme that appears on every page, such as the footer. See Showing a widget on every page.
  • There are no rules for specific URLs, products, collections, devices, or markets. Placement works by page type only.
  • If a widget isn't showing, placement is one of the first things to check. See Widget not showing on your storefront.
