Data and privacy
What Foxr stores, what it collects from shoppers, how long it keeps it, and what happens when you uninstall.
Stored in your Shopify store
Most of what you create in Foxr lives in your own store, not on our servers:
| What | Stored as | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Library clips | FOXR video metaobject entries | Name, caption, subtitles, status, source, call to action (product, collection, or custom link and label), and file details. |
| Widgets | FOXR UGC metaobject entries | Each widget's layout, settings, clips, and the ready-to-show markup. |
| Settings | The Widget settings shop metafield | Everything on the Settings page, including the button text you set for each language and a link to your brand logo. |
| Video and image files | Shopify Files | Uploads, Instagram and TikTok imports, and your brand logo. Foxr never deletes files. |
| FOXR attribution pixel | A web pixel in Settings → Customer events | Added automatically when you first open the app. When a checkout includes a product found through a video, it sends Foxr the order ID, total, currency, and the order's items. Foxr keeps only the items it credits to a video, plus the order total. |
| Video touches | A hidden cart attribute, _foxr_touches | Records which clip a shopper added a product from, or clicked through to its product page from: the widget, clip, A/B version, product or variant, quantity, and time, for the last 8. It travels with the cart into the order. Foxr ignores touches older than 30 days. |
You can see the metaobject entries under Content → Metaobjects in your Shopify admin, but only edit them in the app.
Clip, widget, and settings text is public
Your storefront needs to read clips, widgets, and your settings to show them, so their contents can be read publicly, including clip names, captions, subtitles, and the button text you set. Don't put private notes in them.
Stored by Foxr
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your store's login session with Shopify | So the app can work with your store. |
| Daily counts of views, plays, product clicks, and add-to-carts, per widget, per clip, and per A/B version | For Analytics. They're counts only, not records of individual shoppers. |
| For orders that included a product found through a video: the order ID, order total, currency, and the credited products, quantities, and amounts | To report attributed revenue. Orders with nothing credited to a video aren't stored. |
Foxr doesn't ask for access to your orders or customer profiles. It learns about a purchase only from the attribution pixel.
What Foxr doesn't collect from shoppers
Foxr doesn't store shoppers' names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, IP addresses, customer IDs, device IDs, or cookies.
The storefront widget saves a few small things in the shopper's own browser:
| Saved | For |
|---|---|
| Liked clips | So a liked video stays liked. Likes never leave the browser, and aren't counted or reported. |
| A/B test version | So a shopper keeps seeing the same version of a tested widget. The version letter, A or B, is sent with the anonymous counts and the cart attribute, so results can be split by version. |
| Closed pop ups | So a closed pop up stays closed, depending on its After it is closed setting. Never sent anywhere. |
Consent
- The FOXR attribution pixel only runs for shoppers who allow analytics tracking. Purchases by shoppers who decline aren't credited.
- The widget's anonymous view and click counts, the browser storage above, and the cart attribute are recorded whatever the shopper chose. They don't contain personal information.
How long data is kept
| Data | Kept until |
|---|---|
| Analytics counts and credited orders | You delete the widget (its counts and credited sales are removed), or about 48 hours after you uninstall the app |
| Login session | You uninstall the app. It's deleted straight away. |
| Clips, widgets, and settings in your store | You delete them, or you uninstall the app (see below) |
| Files in Shopify Files | You delete them in Shopify |
_foxr_touches on past orders | Kept as part of your order data |
If you uninstall
- Your storefront: Shopify removes the UGC widget blocks and the app embed from your theme, so widgets stop showing. Code you pasted with embed code isn't removed. Delete it from your theme code yourself.
- Clips, widgets, and settings: Shopify removes the app's data types. It may keep the entries for a while, so reinstalling soon afterwards can bring them back, but that isn't guaranteed. You'd need to add the blocks to your theme again either way.
- Files stay in Shopify Files.
- Login session: Foxr deletes it as soon as you uninstall.
- Analytics: Foxr deletes your store's analytics about 48 hours after you uninstall, when Shopify asks it to erase your store's data.
Customer data requests
Shopify can ask Foxr to hand over or erase a shopper's data. Foxr answers these requests automatically. Because it doesn't store names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, or other details that identify a shopper, there's nothing to hand over or erase. The only order details it keeps are the ones described in Stored by Foxr.
Instagram and TikTok imports
When you import a post, Foxr's server looks up the public post from the link you give it and downloads its video, then uploads a copy to your Shopify Files. The post's caption is copied into the clip. Nothing is posted back to Instagram or TikTok.
Support chat
The live chat on the app's pages is provided by Crisp. It only loads in your Shopify admin, never on your storefront.
Permissions
For what each permission Foxr asks for at install is used for, see What the permissions are for.
Foxr also has one optional permission, Read locales. It's only asked for when you open Settings → Translation, and Foxr uses it to list which languages your store has published. See Translations and button text.
