Choose clips

Pick the clips a widget plays from your Video library, and control their order.

Where to find it: open a widget, Media tab, Clips card.

A widget plays the clips you pick for it, up to 24. Clips always come from your Video library. To use a new video, add it to the library first.

Add clips

Click Choose clips, or Add more clips if the widget already has some. The Media library window opens.

Type in Search files to filter by clip name.

Click each clip you want. Clicked clips show Selected and are added to the end of the list. Click a selected clip again to take it out.

Click Done. The clips appear in the Clips card and in the preview.

Click Save.

The badge on the card, such as 5 of 24, shows how many clips the widget has. If you try to add a 25th, you'll see You can add up to 24 files.

Both videos and images can be added. Images show without a play badge.

The window lists every clip in your Video library, most recently updated first. If it says Your library is empty. Add media on the Library page first., add some videos to the library and come back. A clip with no preview image isn't listed.

Change the order

Clips play in the order of the list, top to bottom. Each row shows the clip's number, thumbnail, name, and type.

In the Clips card, find the clip you want to move.

Click the up or down arrow on its row. The clip swaps places with its neighbour. Repeat until the list is how you want it.

Click Save.

The arrows are greyed out at the top and bottom of the list. There's no drag-and-drop.

If you've set the widget to shuffle or to show videos first, a banner above the list says the storefront won't follow it. Open Heading and clips → Play in this order and choose Manual. See Heading and clip order.

Remove clips

In the Clips card, click the ✕ on the clip's row.

Click Save.

This only takes the clip out of this widget. It stays in your library and in Shopify Files.

What each clip brings with it

The clip's tagged product in the libraryThe product card in the player and the product chip on Carousel and Grid cards. Only the first tagged product counts, and only if it's Active. Changes show on your storefront within about a minute, without saving the widget.
The file's alt text in Shopify FilesThe caption, when captions are on. Saved into the widget when you save it, and again when you save the clip in the library.
The clip's status in the libraryActive clips show. Draft clips are hidden from shoppers.
The file itselfThe video or image, and its poster.

Draft clips

A clip set to Draft in the Video library stays in the widget's list, but shoppers don't see it. It's left out of the thumbnails, the player, and the Pop up bubble. Set it back to Active and it returns in the same place. You don't need to save the widget.

  • Draft clips still show in the Media library window, in the Clips card, and in the editor preview. Check a clip's status in the Video library if you're not sure.
  • Draft clips don't count toward the widget's minimum. If drafts leave too few clips, the whole widget hides. See Show only with at least.
  • The Media number on the Widgets page still counts them.

See Status: Active and Draft.

When clips leave a widget automatically

  • You delete a clip from the library: it's removed from every widget that uses it. If a clip was the only one left in an A/B test's variant B, the test ends with it.
  • A widget ends up with no clips: it disappears from your storefront and shows No media on the Widgets page. Add clips and save to bring it back.
