Troubleshooting

Widget not showing on your storefront

Your widget doesn't appear on your store, or shoppers see a placeholder message instead.

Start on the app's Home page: step 3 of the Setup guide and the banners above it usually point straight at the cause. Click Recheck after you change anything in your theme. Otherwise, work through these in order.

1. Is the app embed on?

Every widget added with the UGC widget block stays hidden until the FOXR - Shoppable Video app embed is on, including in the theme editor's preview.

In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, and click Customize next to your live theme.

Click the App embeds icon in the left sidebar.

Switch on FOXR - Shoppable Video.

Click Save, then reload your storefront.

On Home, step 3 shows App embed off when this is the problem, and its Turn on app embed button does the first three steps for you. See Turn on the app embed. If you've switched to a new theme, turn it on there too.

A Pop up is the exception: it appears even with the embed off, but ignores your Settings page until the embed is on.

2. Is the block in your live theme, with a widget picked?

Open the theme editor on the page where the widget should be and check:

  • There's a UGC widget block on that page.
  • A widget is selected under Widget.
  • The block and its section aren't hidden. Hidden blocks show greyed out, with a crossed-out eye, in the sidebar.
  • You clicked Save in the theme editor, and you're editing your live theme, not a draft.

If shoppers see Select a widget in the theme editor to display shoppable videos., a block has no widget selected, or its widget was deleted. Pick a widget in it, or remove the block. Home flags the first case with Choose a widget in your theme, and the second with No widget selected on step 3.

3. Does the placement allow this page?

A widget only shows on the page types its Placement allows. See Placement.

  • A Product pages widget won't show on your home page, even if its block is there. The same goes for Collection pages, Pages, and Home page on any other kind of page.
  • A Product page layout widget only shows on product pages.
  • If a widget you set to one page type suddenly shows everywhere, check its Placement. Saving a widget while Variant B is selected resets it to Global / any page. Switch to Variant A, set Placement again, and save.

To fix any of these, open the widget, change Placement on the Media tab, and click Save.

4. Does it have enough clips?

  • The Widgets page shows No media for a widget with no clips. That happens when its clips are deleted from the library. Add clips and save.
  • A clip set to Draft in the Video library is hidden from every widget. Open the clip and set its Status back to Active. Drafts don't count towards the minimum below, so a widget whose clips are all drafts hides itself.
  • A widget hides when it has fewer clips than Heading and clips → Show only with at least (Clips on Pop up widgets), or Settings → Feeds → Minimum media to display feed, whichever is higher. On the Product page layout, only the clips matching that product count.

5. Product page layout: are any clips tagged with this product?

With Which clips set to Only clips tagged with this product and Show every clip when none match off, the strip hides on products without a matching clip. Check that:

  • The block is on a product page, not just any page. The block is what tells the widget which product it's on.
  • The clip is in the widget on the Media tab. Clips that aren't in the widget never show, even if they're tagged.
  • The clip's tagged product is this product, and it's Active.

If you tagged a clip after you last saved the widget, give it a minute. The storefront checks the latest tags every time a page loads, but the answer can be about a minute old. If it still doesn't match, save the widget again. See The Product page layout.

6. Pop up widgets

  • The pop up waits a few seconds (Wait, 5 by default) before appearing.
  • If you closed it earlier, After it is closed decides what happens. With Until the shopper leaves, it comes back on your next visit. With Never again once closed, it stays gone for good. With On every page load, it shows again on every page. Try a private browsing window.
  • Only one pop up shows at a time. If a page has two, the one whose Wait ends first appears, and the other only appears if its Wait ends after the first has been closed.
  • It needs a block on the page. For every page, put the block in your footer area.

7. Did you save the widget?

Changes in the widget editor go live when you click Save. Then reload your storefront page. If the editor says Could not save, the message tells you what to fix. See Create your first widget.

8. Is your theme a vintage theme?

Vintage themes can't use app blocks. Home shows This theme cannot use app blocks. Use embed code instead.

A gap where the widget should be

When a widget hides itself, for example for having too few clips, your theme may still show the empty section's spacing. Remove the block from pages where the widget won't show.
