Subtitles

Add a subtitle track to a video so shoppers can follow it with the sound off, and search engines can read what's said.

Most shoppers watch videos with the sound off. Subtitles show them what's being said. The same text can also go into your videos' search engine data as a transcript.

Where to find it: open a video in Video library. Subtitles (WebVTT) is in the Details section.

Add subtitles

  1. In Video library, click the video.
  2. Under Details, click Upload subtitle file.
  3. Choose a .vtt (WebVTT) or .srt (SubRip) file, up to 512 KB.
  4. The subtitles appear in the box, converted to WebVTT. They replace anything that was there.
  5. Click Save in the save bar.

Most video editors and captioning tools can export .srt or .vtt files.

The format

Each cue is a timing line followed by the words spoken:

WEBVTT

00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.500
This serum changed my morning routine.

00:00:03.500 --> 00:00:06.000
Two drops, and my skin feels amazing all day.
  • Times can be HH:MM:SS.mmm or MM:SS.mmm. SRT-style commas, like 00:00:01,000, work too.
  • The WEBVTT header is optional, and so are cue numbers.
  • Each cue must end after it starts. Cues that don't are skipped.
  • Formatting such as <i> is removed, and styling blocks and cue settings are dropped.

When you save, the app tidies the track into standard WebVTT, so the text in the box can look slightly different afterwards.

What shoppers see

  • Subtitles show in the player, the fullscreen viewer and the mini player, for videos only. They don't show on thumbnails or cards, or for videos that play inside a card.
  • They're on by default. A CC button in the player turns them off and on. Videos without subtitles don't show the button.
  • The track takes the language of your storefront page.

Allow a few minutes

New or changed subtitles can take up to about 10 minutes to appear on your storefront.

Remove subtitles

Open the video and click Remove subtitles under the box. It only shows when the clip has subtitles.

Click Save in the save bar.

If something goes wrong

MessageWhat to do
Those subtitles have no readable cues…No timing lines were recognised. Check that each cue has a line like 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.000, with the text on the line below it.
clip.srt has no readable cues. Upload a WebVTT (.vtt) or SubRip (.srt) track. The file isn't a subtitle track Foxr can read. Export it again as .vtt or .srt.
That file is too large to be a subtitle track. The file is over 512 KB. A shoppable clip's track should be far smaller, so check you chose the right file.

Subtitles for search engines

With Add video structured data and Include the transcript in structured data both on in Settings → AEO & GEO, the subtitle text goes into each video's structured data as its transcript, up to the first 1,200 characters or so. That's what lets search and answer engines quote your clips.

The transcript updates when you save the clip

The transcript is written into each widget's page data. When you save a clip's subtitles, Foxr refreshes the widgets that use it for you. The subtitles in the player update on their own too. If a transcript still looks old after a few minutes, open the widget and click Save to refresh it.
