Save, discard, and publish

How changes in the cart editor reach your store, and what the save messages mean.

Nothing you change in the editor reaches your store until you save. As soon as you change a setting, Shopify's save bar appears at the top of the admin with Save and Discard.

Save your changes

Make your changes in any tabs. You can switch tabs freely: changes in every tab are kept until you save or discard.

Click Save in the bar at the top of the Shopify admin.

Wait for the message:

  • Cart Saved Successfully on the live cart. Your store now shows the changes.
  • Draft saved on a draft. Shoppers still see your live cart.

After saving the live cart, a card asks Does it look good on your store? Click Preview to open your store in a new tab and check the drawer.

Discard your changes

Click Discard in the save bar and confirm. The editor goes back to the last saved version, including removing any widgets you added since then.

What happens when you save the live cart

Saving the live cart does two things:

  1. It updates the Shopify discounts the app uses at checkout. The app creates and keeps two automatic discounts in your store: Foxr Discount (rewards, volume discounts, and upsells with discount) and Foxr Free Shipping (free shipping rewards). Don't edit or delete them in Shopify.
  2. It publishes the drawer's settings to your store.

Saving a draft skips the discounts. A draft's rewards, volume, and upsell discounts start working at checkout only when you publish it.

Publish a draft

Open the draft in the editor.

Click Publish in the editor header.

Read Publish this cart? and click Publish. Unsaved changes are saved first.

The draft becomes your live cart, and checkout discounts switch to its settings. The cart that was live before is kept as a draft. You can also publish from the Carts page with the globe icon.

Messages you might see

MessageWhat it means and what to do
Changes not saved — Too large to publish to your storeOne part of the cart has too much in it. Each module can hold up to 127 KB. The editor opens the tab that's too big: shorten long texts or custom templates, or remove some items, then save again.
Changes not saved — Checkout settings too largeShopify limits the settings a checkout discount can read to 10 KB. Remove some offers, tiers, or products, then save again.
Approaching the size limitA warning before you hit the 10 KB checkout limit. It lists each discount type as a percentage of the limit.
We couldn't generate your discount codeThe checkout discount couldn't be created, so nothing was saved. This usually means your store has reached Shopify's limit of 25 active automatic discounts. Deactivate some, or click Contact Us.
Fix the shipping protection settings before saving.Shipping protection is on but a field is missing. The editor opens Add Ons so you can fix it.
Fix the link in "Promo banner" before savingA promo banner's link must start with / or https://.
Another cart was published while you were editing.Someone published a different cart. Your changes weren't saved. Close the editor and open the cart again from Carts.
Another cart is being published. Try again in a moment.Wait a few seconds and save again.
Foxr Cart Drawer is inactiveThe app embed is off in your theme, so shoppers don't see the drawer. Click Activate, then Save in the theme editor.

Check red field errors before you save

A field that's left empty or has a bad colour code shows a red message, such as Value can't be blank or Invalid hex code. These messages don't stop the save, so an empty field can go live. Fix every red message before you click Save.
